Wipeout! Stress is the Main Cause of Subluxations!

Hi this is Dr. Rob with your weekly health blog. This week we’re going to talk about causes of subluxations. There are 3 main causes which in reality are just one cause: stress. The inability of your body to adapt to stress causes subluxations. It could be a physical stress, a mental type stress, even a chemical stress.

Let’s discuss one of the causes, Physical Stress, the most obvious one. If you want to see a way one can subluxate himself, tune into Wipeout on ABC on Thursday Dec 8th at 8 p.m. You’ll be able to see my daughter as one of the contestants on Wipeout subluxating herself!
Take a look at the way people can subluxate themselves then we can discuss the biomechanics of it later!

This is a friendly reminder to always get your kids checked out, ’cause it seems like with kids every day is a wipeout!

Chiropractor Manhattan Beach Has A Challenge For You

Hello this is Dr. Rob with your weekly health blog. Did you know that if you eliminate glutamate and aspartame from your diet for 4 months it can eliminate chronic pain? That’s coming from the Annals of Pharmacology in 2002.
If you really want to challenge yourself, go a step further by eliminating the chemicals and processed foods from your diet for 4 months and see how that is able to handle chronic pain and your over-all well being.
The Average American consumes about 150 pounds of food additives a year. Taking that in consideration, our bodies are having a hard time trying to process all these chemicals.
Let me know how it goes. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate in contacting me at Bates Chiropractic 310-545-4188 or online at www.chiropractormanhattanbeach.com
Also, tomorrow evening Wednesday November 16th from 6-9 is the Holiday Open House. All the businesses and restaurants are opening their doors with sample food, give-aways, and wine!
We will be having The World Famous Spot in Hermosa Beach catering the event here! Bring your friends and come see Santa, Christmas carolers, and the tree lighting at the pier!

National Vaccine Awareness Week

Hi this is Dr. Rob with your health blog for the week. This week is Vaccine Awareness Week, October 30th through November 5th.
People have been asking me about vaccines lately, whether or not they should get their kids vaccinated. I really don’t think my opinion is important. What’s important is that you get the facts. Don’t take my opinion, nor your medical doctor’s opinion, get the facts. There’s a book I recommend my patients to read which is Make An Informed Vaccine Decision by Dr. Mayer Eisenstein. He reviews a lot of great facts.
That’s one great source you can go through, but also you can go to www.mercola.com where they will hold a free screening of the documentary The Greater Good. It’s a very rational, scientific discussion of both sides. You’ll get both sides of the coin, pro and con on vaccines. It will give you a better idea on how to make those decisions instead of relying on emotions to guide your decisions.
Get the facts, go to www.greatergoodmovie.org and that will redirect you to www.mercola.com to view this documentary. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate in calling me at Bates Chiropractic at (310)545-4188 or online at www.chiropractormanhattanbeach.com

We want to have our own health freedom, and this is part of it. Make your own choice!

D.A.R.E. 2011

Good morning this is Dr. Rob with your weekly health blog. This week is DARE week: Drug Awareness/Drug Prevention. It’s a great program, that allows the kids to become more aware and help prevent the unnecessary deaths from drugs. According to The Journal of American Medical Association, street drugs kill approximately 10,000 people per year.  10, 000 preventable deaths. It’s great to have this program.

Since it is Drug Week, I was reading another article in Newsweek (April 27th, 1998) that stated that properly prescribed legal drugs from a Medical Doctor kill approximately 106,000 – 190,000 people per year. That’s huge! They calculated it as being the 4th leading cause of death in the United States.

So, drugs are a huge problem: we have a drug culture! We have to really look to see what’s happening at home and what we’re really teaching our kids, what we’re teaching ourselves, and what we truly believe. One way to look at it is to see when we you use drugs. Is it for a First Aid situation, when you should use them? Or is it in every day use when you get the first pain that comes up?

Investigate it, take a look at how many drugs you have in your cupboard, do you really need all of them? And what are you actually showing your kids?

If you have any questions about this, give me at Bates Chiropractic at 310-545-4188 or www.chiropractormanhattanbeach.com

The Medication-Free Minority

Hi this is Dr. Rob with your weekly health blog. Did you know that 9 out of 10 Americans 65 or older are on at least one prescription drug? Which means there is only about 10 % of Americans 65 or older who are not taking prescription drugs.
About 50% of the Americans who are 65 or older and on medication take at least 5 or more prescription drugs! That’s pretty alarming since drugs treat only symptoms and do not correct the fundamental cause of health problems.
We should get down to the basic: thinking well, eating well, and moving well. That’s what we talk about in the office all the time. Part of moving well is getting adjustments on a regular basis to keep the spine moving well in order to get a good nerve supply to the organs.
It’s important to stay regular with your adjustments, it doesn’t matter if you’re 2 days old or 102, you need to get your spine checked. Spread the word, get off the drugs, and start focusing on health: moving well, eating well, and thinking well.
If you have any questions don’t hesitate in contacting me Dr. Rob at Bates Chiropractic at (310) 545-4188 or on our website www.chiropractormanhattanbeach.com.
This week we’ll be open Monday thru Wednesday and closed Thursday through Saturday. Make sure you make it in for your adjustments this week.

Would You Give Your Pets Cola In Their Water Dish?

This is Dr. Rob with your weekly health blog: I have a question for you. Would you ever think of giving your dog or cat a can of Coca-Cola in their water dish as if you’re giving it a treat? If you think that I am crazy saying, “of course not, I wouldn’t do that, it’s not healthy for my pet”, why would you give it to your kids or yourself?
We have to revisit these areas where we think it’s okay to have these “treats.” It really isn’t ok, because they’re not promoting health. We, as parents, have to develop the skill to know what is good to eat and pass it along to our kids so that they can grow up healthy and strong. That is why it’s important to get regular spinal adjustments. A lot of people that come into the office leave their kids at home to develop the same problems they originally came in with.
The time to act is before problems occur. That is true health maintenance. If you have any questions about these things, you can always contact me at Bates Chiropractic at (310)545-4188 or www.chiropractormanhattanbeach.com

Mahalo! Life is Motion

Mahalo, this is Dr. Rob with your health blog this week. I’m here in Kaanapali, Maui working on motion, because motion is life and life is motion. This week’s blog is on motion. When you have lack of motion, like sitting in those chairs all day, it’s like sugar for your spine. That’s why you have to get out and do a good stimulation to the nerve system, stimulate the spine, and stimulate the brain. One of the best things you can do to stimulate the spine is to get out exercise like stand up paddling. You just saw me try stand up paddling for the first time while working on my spine. Remember keep up with your physical activity and adjustments.

How Do You Treat Your Chronic Spinal Pain?

Hi this is Dr. Rob with your weekly health blog and this week we’re going to talk about pain; chronic pain. One of the most common uses of Cox-2 inhibitors (drugs) is to treat pain.
In 2004, they temporarily took one of the Cox-2 inhibitors called Vioxx off the market. The reason being it was associated with 50,000 deaths over a five year period of time due to heart attacks and strokes. The other Cox-2 inhibitors like Celebrex and Bextra have similar problems. They have many dangerous side effects, but we want to talk about a study that came out on The Journal of Spine, a highly respected orthopedic journal, in July of 2003. They studied the effects of chiropractic adjustments versus the Cox-2 inhibitors, the Celebrex, the Vioxx, and the Bextra. They study found that spinal adjustments worked five times better in treating chronic back pain than the Cox-2 inhibitors. Interesting enough, the drug group had more side effects than it relieved the pain while chiropractic adjustments had no adverse effects.
Now, we should always go with the most conservative route especially when in treating chronic spinal pain. The medical studies show that chiropractic is more conservative than the its counter part.
If you are experiencing chronic spinal pain or know someone who does, contact us at Bates Chiropractic at (310) 545- 4188 or via our website: www.chiropractormanhattanbeach.com.

The Damaging Effects of Forward Head Posture

The Journal of Geriatrics came out with a study in October 2004; what they found was that people with forward posture or a hunchback, the more their spine hunched forward and was stuck in that position, the closer to death they were. Let’s look at reasons why that could be:

If you look at Patty, she’s stuck in this forward posture. This posture is closing down on all the nerve pathways and it’s inhibiting her ability to breathe and move properly.

We’re going to do a little exercise. I want you guys to participate in this too. I want you to get into that poor posture that you usually are in front of the computer or maybe you’re stuck that way all the time or perhaps you’ve even noticed your kids in that position because of their heavy backpacks.

Go ahead and get into that posture, so you can join us and feel this. This is experiential; I want you to feel what happens in this forward head posture. Now try this: try to bring your arms all the way up and over your head. How far do you get? Notice how far Patty can bring her arms over.

Now go ahead and bring your head over center, so that your ears are over your shoulders. Now go ahead and try that again. See how Patty is able to get her arms up there with no problem? One of the things that happens with forward head posture is that it puts a lot of pressure on the nerves that feed out into the shoulder, and mechanically doesn’t allow the shoulders to open up which can lead to problems like carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic rotator cuff strains, neck problems, and headaches.

Now try this other exercise, get back into that posture again, as if you were in front of the computer, and take a deep breath; feel how that feels. Now bring your ears back over your shoulders and see how the posture pops back up. Now go ahead and take a deep breath. How does that feel? There’s a big difference. This will cause you to be unable to oxygenate your tissues. It causes nerve damage to the nerves that feed out to the lungs and the heart, the shoulders and the hands. Just by correcting posture is a huge thing.

That’s what we do: we correct the subluxation which allows those nerve channels to open up. But, we also do things to correct the posture so it’s not a problem either. You have to do both those things to be effective. Then your body would be healthier than it’s been in a long time.

Is Exercise Enough For A Healthy Spine?

This morning I got up early, worked out, and even did some yoga. I also got my back checked for subluxations by a fellow chiropractor. Why did I do that? Even thought I worked out, did yoga, and in good shape, I need to get my spine checked. I have yoga instructors that have been doing yoga for years that come in here, pilates instructors that are in great shape as well. They can have spines that move well, but there can be a segment that’s not moving right, and it could be out of alignment or subluxated. So for that reason, when it’s subluxated, the bone loses its position and it can choke on that nerve. If you look at Grey’s anatomy, it states that the brain and spinal chord control and coordinate all functions and structures of the body, just not some bad muscles, but all structures and functions, meaning your heart, your kidneys, your lungs, your liver, your immune system, your digestive system, all systems of the body.

So, if you have a subluxation it can interfere with the function of your body. Which means it interferes with your life and your health. For that reason, everyone should get their spine checked, for that reason I went and got my spine checked even though I worked out and did yoga this morning.

Which brings to mind another thing, this weekend at the Art Festival in Hermosa Beach, I’m going to have a booth down there. I will be there Saturday, Sunday, and Monday from 12-6. I want to invite all my patients down. All of my patients that come down will receive a free spinal check up and adjustment. That’s right, patients, it’s on me. All I ask in return is that you bring a guest down, so I could meet them. Then I’ll perform a free spinal examination on any guest that you bring down. That’s the deal! Your guest will get checked for subluxations; you might save a life!
