Expecting Mothers and the Drug-Free Approach
This is Dr. Rob with your weekly health blog. I was just reading a study in The American Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics regarding pain relievers for expecting mothers. It discussed pain relievers such as the over the counter drugs, the non steroidal anti-inflammatories, like Motrin and Advil. Basically they say not to use pain relievers because they create birth defects, especially in the first trimester. They also talked about Tylenol, don’t take it any time during your pregnancy because not only does it increase birth defects in the child it increases the possibility of your child having asthma.
That is why we have so many expecting mothers come in. 1, because getting adjustments is a drug free approach; 2, it is very healthy for the mother and very safe for the expected baby; and 3, it allows for a good nerve supply and increases the chance for an easier delivery, by keeping the pelvis in alignment.
Also, you can use ice, because its only side effect is it’s cold. If you have any questions regarding this topic, don’t hesitate in contacting me at Bates Chiropractic (310)545-4188 or www.chiropractormanhattanbeach.com
Have a great day. Keep spreading the word. We’ll see you in here for your regular adjustments. Take Care!
The Importance of Exercise
This is Dr. Rob with your weekly health blog! I just read some information on exercise and how important it is for your overall health to just get the motion in. We always talk about it in the office. There was a study done in The Journal of Applied Physiology in 2002 that stated that people who do not exercise have a 50 – 72% higher incidences of deadly melanoma, or skin cancer, than people who exercise 5 to 7 times a week. You may be thinking, “what the heck does exercising have to do with skin cancer? I thought it was from the sun.”
Well it shows you they don’t know exactly what causes melanoma. There are other factors involved like the immune response. The fact is that when you are ih better shape you’re going to have a better immune response. It’s not just all the sun, you have to take care of your body from the inside out as well. That’s why people come in anf get regular adjustments to keep their nerve system working at 100%.
If you have any questions about this, feel free to call us at Bates Chiropractic at (310) 545-4188 or on the web at www.chiropractormanhattanbeach.com
Keep spreading the word and have a great day. We appreciate you.
Food For Thought: Whole Food Supplements
Hi this is Dr. Rob with your weekly health blog, I have a question for you: When thinking about supplements, what do you think your body has an easier time to recognize, 500 mg of man-made Vitamin C or extracting Vitamin C by eating an orange?
Scientists know that there is more to an orange than Vitamin C; a lot of what is in the orange is going to augment that Vitamin C that is needed for our total health. It works in the web of health of the body that we don’t understand yet. For that reason, when you take Vitamin C or other nutrients that are extracted like that, it can create imbalances that we just can’t foresee.
Your best bet is to have whole food type of supplements. Whole food supplements are condensed supplements that are condensed type of foods that are high in nutrients. If you do want to take 500 mg of Vitamin C that is something you want to do under the care of a naturopath or nutritionist that is trying to treat a condition.
If you want to build health, maintenance, and repair of the body, you want to look for whole food supplements that you can take for the rest of your life.
That’s some food for thought! If you have any questions contact me at Bates Chiropractic at (310)545-4188 or www.chiropractormanhattanbeach.com
Organic Produce vs. Conventional Produce
Hi this is Dr. Rob with your weekly health blog. This week we’re going to talk about organic produce vs. conventional produce. I’ve spoken to a lot of people who say they don’t want to pay the higher price of organic produce. But let’s look at what you’re getting: standard conventional produce is loaded with chemicals, such as herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers, with the idea of protecting the plant against bugs in order for the crop to survive. What happens, however, is that the chemicals go into the ground and kill up to 85% of the microbes within the soil; meaning 85% of the nutrients produced by the microbes in the soil are not getting to the plant. In other words, conventional type of farming produces a plastic plant that loaded with chemicals and not a nice healthy one That’s what the lower price is paying for as opposed to organic produce which is a higher quality of food. It’s going to have a much higher nutrient value than the standardized farming as well as devoid of the harmful chemicals. That alone would be worth paying the higher price – although it’s what you should be getting in the first place. Organic is the way to go if you want to prevent chemicals in your diet and a higher quality of nutrient. Look at organic, because it’s going to be your best buy. If you have any questions about this, you can contact me at Bates Chiropractic at (310)545-4188 or www.chiropractormanhattanbeach.com.
Remember stay consistent with your adjustments.
Sickness Vs. Health
Aloha from Kaanapali, Maui coming to you with our weekly health blog. This is an exciting topic, an interesting topic. We are going to talk about sickness versus health. When you think about sickness versus health, keep in mind this analogy:
You walk into a dark room and you flip on the light. What happens to the darkness? Nothing, because darkness is a non-entity whereas light is an entity.
Now, if you have a sickness or an illness, what happens to the illness? Nothing, because illness is a non-entity. You only get sick when you pull away or take away health.
So, what is health? Health is the body’s capability to adapt to its environment from internal mechanisms. Your ability to adapt comes from the inside out.
Now, what allows your body to adapt? One of the most powerful things that allows your body to adapt is your nerve system. The brain’s job is to coordinate all functions of your body via messages through the nerves. That means your ability of your body’s immune system to fight off infections. Your cardiovascular system, your digestive system, your reproductive system, all of it needs the proper coordination of the central nerve system so that it can stay at a higher level of health in order to function.
Chiropractically, when you have a subluxation -a bone out of alignment which interferes with nerve messages- the body can’t use the nerve system to coordinate its tissues or its systems as well so you have a lower level of health. This, in turn, opens the door to dis-ease, dysfunction, and for some people, disease.
When you get an adjustment, it puts the bone back into alignment taking pressure of the nerve allowing the body to communicate through that pathway. This allows the body to coordinate at a higher level and function at a higher level which means you’re going to have a higher level of health. That’s why it’s essential to get in for regular adjustments – not just for you, but for your kids, your parents, your aunts, your uncles, your neighbors, they should all be getting regular adjustments. That’s how you build health and keep at a higher level of health. That’s one of the most powerful things that you can do.
That’s were the analogy we talked about comes into play. We are not treating sickness; it is a non-entity, we trying to building health. We add health to the body. That is our goal chiropractically.

Mahalo, this is Dr. Rob with your health blog this week from Kaanapali, Hawaii. I’m on vacation, but I wanted to discuss with you a talk I had this morning with my daughter about Chemistry and drug taking. She had a talk with her professor about Chemistry and how there is a predictable outcome.
For example, if you add A to B and C the outcome would be ABC. It should be predictable and duplicable.
My daughter asked her professor what happens if you have a medication in your body, seeing that the body is a variation of chemicals. You may take an aspirin that mixes with your body chemistry a certain way and it may take care of your headache: however, someone else may take the same aspirin and get a bleeding ulcer while another person may take an aspirin and they may experience ringing in their ears.
That’s where side effects come from; when you start adding different chemicals together there are unpredictable outcomes.
I thought I’d share this with you in this week’s blog, you never know what’s going to happen when you take something as simple as an aspirin.
Just wanted to remind you that I will be in the office on Friday morning also you can come visit us at the fair in Hermosa Beach and get adjusted for free while your friends get their spines checked for free as well!
Mahalo!
Chiropractor Manhattan Beach Shares a Typical Dinner
Hi! This is Dr. Rob with this week’s health blog. Did you know that you can decrease your cancer rates by 20% by increasing your green leafy vegetable intake by 20%? You can decrease cancer rates by 40% by increasing your cruciferous intake by 20%. An easy way to stay healthy is to make sure you have a big salad at dinner time. You’ll get all of the protective nutrients, the phytochemicals, the fiber, the minerals, the vitamins that are necessary to protect your body against cancer, heart disease, and other diseases!
Now, when I talk about a big salad, this is what I mean about a big salad (see video link). Many people think of a salad as a little meal that accompanies dinner, but I eat a large dinner size salad. Plus, I eat this before any thing else. When you eat a large salad before any other meal, you get all those protective nutrients that protect yourself against cancer and heart disease but you will also normalize your weight.
I will be talking about this in more detail at our Health and Nutrition Workshop on June 16th. Sign up at the front desk at Bates Chiropractic or by calling us at (310) 545-4188. Check us out on our website www.chiropractormanhattanbeach.com
Rubber Band Exercise
This is Dr. Rob with your weekly health blog. I’ve been seeing a lot of people who work in front of the computer -most people work in front of the computer and text quite a bit- having problems with carpal tunnel syndrome. This is typically due to the position they’re putting themselves in: head forward, hand in a claw-like position. After awhile, the muscles in your hand begin shortening because of the constant position it’s put in.
Here’s one thing I want you to try for a week:
Get a rubber band, place it around your fingers, and as you’re driving or walking around, start pushing your fingers outward. Make sure the rubber band is not too thick just thin enough to provide resistance as you open up those muscles. If you keep opening those muscles, it will begin to develop the muscles on the opposite side of the hand.
That’s your homework for this week; you’ve got to do it a couple hundred times a day. You can easily do it while you’re driving or in front of the computer. You will see that you will soon have less pain in your hand.
We will talk more about how to correct forward head posture which is more complicated. Until then you can always call me at our office Bates Chiropractic at (310) 545-4188 or on our website: www.chiropractormanhattanbeach.com
Life is Motion, Motion is Life
Life is motion and motion is life, and the same goes for your spine. What we find is that when you lose motion in your spine, the body begins to lose health. That’s why it’s really important to keep exercising, doing yoga and whatever types of stretching exercises you like to do, because it keeps global motion in your body.
When it comes to individual segments of your spine, the spine needs to move segmentally to work properly. If the spine begins to lose proper motion, it starts to create problems. The brain sends out messages and data to all of the organs of the body, but there are also messages and data that feed back up to the brain. When the vertebrae are moving properly, it actually sends out electrical impulses from the spine and nourishes the brain and allows the brain to regulate the physiology of all your organs to keep you healthy.
When the spinal vertebrae are not moving properly, the electrical impulses and data of those particular segments are no longer feeding into the brain. Now the brain is no longer receiving the electrical nourishment and is not able to regulate the physiology, meaning your health will suffer. That is called a subluxation.
That’s why we have whole families that come in, the children and grandparents get checked on a regular basis. Your body needs to have regular motion in the spine, that’s why we look for the subluxation. It’s very important to get family check ups. If you aren’t doing so, give us a call and we’d be glad to check you, your kids, and your whole family.
