The Importance of Exercise

This is Dr. Rob with your weekly health blog! I just read some information on exercise and how important it is for your overall health to just get the motion in. We always talk about it in the office. There was a study done in The Journal of Applied Physiology in 2002 that stated that people who do not exercise have a 50 – 72% higher incidences of deadly melanoma, or skin cancer, than people who exercise 5 to 7 times a week. You may be thinking, “what the heck does exercising have to do with skin cancer? I thought it was from the sun.”

Well it shows you they don’t know exactly what causes melanoma. There are other factors involved like the immune response. The fact is that when you are ih better shape you’re going to have a better immune response. It’s not just all the sun, you have to take care of your body from the inside out as well. That’s why people come in anf get regular adjustments to keep their nerve system working at 100%.

Mahalo! Life is Motion

Mahalo, this is Dr. Rob with your health blog this week. I’m here in Kaanapali, Maui working on motion, because motion is life and life is motion. This week’s blog is on motion. When you have lack of motion, like sitting in those chairs all day, it’s like sugar for your spine. That’s why you have to get out and do a good stimulation to the nerve system, stimulate the spine, and stimulate the brain. One of the best things you can do to stimulate the spine is to get out exercise like stand up paddling. You just saw me try stand up paddling for the first time while working on my spine. Remember keep up with your physical activity and adjustments.

Rubber Band Exercise

This is Dr. Rob with your weekly health blog. I’ve been seeing a lot of people who work in front of the computer -most people work in front of the computer and text quite a bit- having problems with carpal tunnel syndrome. This is typically due to the position they’re putting themselves in: head forward, hand in a claw-like position. After awhile, the muscles in your hand begin shortening because of the constant position it’s put in.
Here’s one thing I want you to try for a week:
Get a rubber band, place it around your fingers, and as you’re driving or walking around, start pushing your fingers outward. Make sure the rubber band is not too thick just thin enough to provide resistance as you open up those muscles. If you keep opening those muscles, it will begin to develop the muscles on the opposite side of the hand.
That’s your homework for this week; you’ve got to do it a couple hundred times a day. You can easily do it while you’re driving or in front of the computer. You will see that you will soon have less pain in your hand.
We will talk more about how to correct forward head posture which is more complicated. Until then you can always call me at our office Bates Chiropractic at (310) 545-4188 or on our website: www.chiropractormanhattanbeach.com

Chiropractor Manhattan Beach Asks, “Which Direction Are You Headed With Your Health?”

When patients come into my office, I ask myself, “which direction are they headed with their health?”

It doesn’t matter where you are at this moment, it matters where you’re heading.

We have some patients whose spines are really poor and they’re not in good shape, but they really have that attitude and discipline where now they’re determined to go into the direction where they’re adding more to their health by getting regular adjustments, doing their spinal molding at home, working on their mental attitude, as well as their nutrition. Really, they’re committed to their health and have the attitude to do it. That type of person is in the right direction in building health opposed to some people that come in that may be in good health at that time, they look good and look fit, they get checked out with all their medical tests and the doctors says they’re healthy, but they’re in the direction where they aren’t practicing those good things, they aren’t getting their adjustments like they should to keep the nerve system working properly, they aren’t eating right, hey aren’t getting the proper exercise and working on their mental mindsets. Those guys are actually moving away from health. It really depends on which direction you’re headed. So, this week, let’s really give an honest evaluation to see which way you are honestly focusing on which way are you headed.

Just remember, every moment is a new beginning.

Giraffe Q&A

Hi, everyone, this is Dr. Rob, and I’m coming to you from the Wild Animal Park with a mini quiz of the day!

Q: The human neck contains seven bones. How many bones do you think are in a giraffe’s neck?

A: Seven; Just like us!

Keep charging just like my friends the rhinos!

Do You Have Smart Muscles?

Hello, Manhattan Beach, today we’re talking about making smart muscles as opposed to walking around with dumb muscles. Our goal here is to correct subluxations to free the nerve channels of the spine. Then we use certain types of neuromuscular reeducation exercises to make the muscles smart again. This connects the nerve system with the muscles, because, as you know, nerves control muscles. The muscles have to integrate with the rest of the other muscles and joints of the body in order to function right. What coordinates all of that together is the Central Nerve System.

You can see throughout the office we have people working towards smartening their muscles with spinal molding exercises, such as wall work and stabilization of the pelvis.

We’re just turning the power on here at Bates Chiropractic! Have a great day.
