Food For Thought: Whole Food Supplements

Hi this is Dr. Rob with your weekly health blog, I have a question for you: When thinking about supplements, what do you think your body has an easier time to recognize, 500 mg of man-made Vitamin C or extracting Vitamin C by eating an orange?
Scientists know that there is more to an orange than Vitamin C; a lot of what is in the orange is going to augment that Vitamin C that is needed for our total health. It works in the web of health of the body that we don’t understand yet. For that reason, when you take Vitamin C or other nutrients that are extracted like that, it can create imbalances that we just can’t foresee.
Your best bet is to have whole food type of supplements. Whole food supplements are condensed supplements that are condensed type of foods that are high in nutrients. If you do want to take 500 mg of Vitamin C that is something you want to do under the care of a naturopath or nutritionist that is trying to treat a condition.
If you want to build health, maintenance, and repair of the body, you want to look for whole food supplements that you can take for the rest of your life.
That’s some food for thought! If you have any questions contact me at Bates Chiropractic at (310)545-4188 or www.chiropractormanhattanbeach.com

Organic Produce vs. Conventional Produce

Hi this is Dr. Rob with your weekly health blog. This week we’re going to talk about organic produce vs. conventional produce. I’ve spoken to a lot of people who say they don’t want to pay the higher price of organic produce. But let’s look at what you’re getting: standard conventional produce is loaded with chemicals, such as herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers, with the idea of protecting the plant against bugs in order for the crop to survive. What happens, however, is that the chemicals go into the ground and kill up to 85% of the microbes within the soil; meaning 85% of the nutrients produced by the microbes in the soil are not getting to the plant. In other words, conventional type of farming produces a plastic plant that loaded with chemicals and not a nice healthy one That’s what the lower price is paying for as opposed to organic produce which is a higher quality of food. It’s going to have a much higher nutrient value than the standardized farming as well as devoid of the harmful chemicals. That alone would be worth paying the higher price – although it’s what you should be getting in the first place. Organic is the way to go if you want to prevent chemicals in your diet and a higher quality of nutrient. Look at organic, because it’s going to be your best buy. If you have any questions about this, you can contact me at Bates Chiropractic at (310)545-4188 or www.chiropractormanhattanbeach.com.

Remember stay consistent with your adjustments.

It’s Cherry and Nutrition Workshop Season!

Hi, this is Dr. Rob with your weekly health blog. I just wanted to let you know that we are going to have a Nutrition and Weight-loss Workshop here at the office this Thursday June 16th at 6:30 pm. It’s going to be a fantastic workshop: the information that may save your life, your friends’ life, or your family’s life, so make sure you make it to it! The seating is very limited here so make sure you call to reserve your spot.

That being said, I do want to let you know it is cherry season. You should be eating cherries. Why? Because they’re high in antioxidants and have high anti-inflammatory properties. Studies show that cherries are ten times more potent than aspirin. So, you can throw away the aspirin and eat cherries instead. They’re much better for you and don’t have the side effects of aspirin. Over the counter medications like aspirin kill 23,000 people a year. But, I don’t know if anybody’s really died of cherry consumption.

If you have any questions about our upcoming Nutrition Workshop, don’t hesitate in contacting us at Bates Chiropractic at (310) 545-4188 or www.chiroprctormanhattanbeach.com. We look forward to seeing you at the Workshop!

Chiropractor Manhattan Beach Shares A Typical Breakfast

Good morning, this is Dr. Rob with your health blog for the week. I want to go over some of the things you may want to eat for breakfast. Now, if you’re doing the one pound rule that we talked about in our last nutrition workshop and would like to lose weight, a good way to do so is by eating romaine lettuce before each meal.

It’s about 5:30 in the morning right now and this is how I start off my mornings: I go into the refrigerator, grab my bag of romaine lettuce, tear out one of the hearts, and eat the leaves one by one. I eat the leaves like potato chips. You should have an entire heart of romaine lettuce before breakfast. What I typically like to eat after lettuce is a grapefruit, then a handful of my chlorella, and then a coconut yogurt in which I throw a couple scoops of collagen. I showed you a typical breakfast, but I also like to have oatmeal with frozen blueberries after the romaine.

Here’s the thing, you want to get the heart of lettuce in before the rest of your breakfast, because it will give you all of those phytochemicals and protective nutrients, such as the fiber, the enzymes, and the vitamins that will protect you against cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. If you’re looking to lose weight, it is also important to eat your veggies before anything else, to naturally lose and stabilize your weight.

We will be having another Nutrition Workshop on June 16th. Check with the front desk to sign up. There is limited seating.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate in calling us here at Bates Chiropractic at (310)545-4188 or on our website: www.chiropractormanhattanbeach.com .

Increase Your Life Expectancy and Decrease Diseases

This is Dr. Rob with this week’s health blog. There’s a very powerful concept we’re going to go over today. There are certain things you can do that can increase your life expectancy and decrease all diseases across the board, especially the major diseases like heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and stroke.
Studies done on lab rats all the way up to primates show that decreasing the calorie intake by up to 30% will increase your life expectancy and decrease diseases across the board.
What does that mean to us here? If you find the foods that are low in calorie but high in nutrition, not only are you going to lose weight, but you’re going to live longer, feel better, and have less disease!
It’s a powerful concept that we are going to be discussing in more detail at our Nutrition Workshop that we will have in early June.
If you have any questions regarding this topic don’t hesitate in contacting us at Bates Chiropractic at (310) 545-4188 or via our website: www.chiropractormanhattanbeach.com
Don’t forget to stay regular with your adjustments, because you need a great nerve supply in order to build a new body.

The Damaging Effects of Forward Head Posture

The Journal of Geriatrics came out with a study in October 2004; what they found was that people with forward posture or a hunchback, the more their spine hunched forward and was stuck in that position, the closer to death they were. Let’s look at reasons why that could be:

If you look at Patty, she’s stuck in this forward posture. This posture is closing down on all the nerve pathways and it’s inhibiting her ability to breathe and move properly.

We’re going to do a little exercise. I want you guys to participate in this too. I want you to get into that poor posture that you usually are in front of the computer or maybe you’re stuck that way all the time or perhaps you’ve even noticed your kids in that position because of their heavy backpacks.

Go ahead and get into that posture, so you can join us and feel this. This is experiential; I want you to feel what happens in this forward head posture. Now try this: try to bring your arms all the way up and over your head. How far do you get? Notice how far Patty can bring her arms over.

Now go ahead and bring your head over center, so that your ears are over your shoulders. Now go ahead and try that again. See how Patty is able to get her arms up there with no problem? One of the things that happens with forward head posture is that it puts a lot of pressure on the nerves that feed out into the shoulder, and mechanically doesn’t allow the shoulders to open up which can lead to problems like carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic rotator cuff strains, neck problems, and headaches.

Now try this other exercise, get back into that posture again, as if you were in front of the computer, and take a deep breath; feel how that feels. Now bring your ears back over your shoulders and see how the posture pops back up. Now go ahead and take a deep breath. How does that feel? There’s a big difference. This will cause you to be unable to oxygenate your tissues. It causes nerve damage to the nerves that feed out to the lungs and the heart, the shoulders and the hands. Just by correcting posture is a huge thing.

That’s what we do: we correct the subluxation which allows those nerve channels to open up. But, we also do things to correct the posture so it’s not a problem either. You have to do both those things to be effective. Then your body would be healthier than it’s been in a long time.

Chiropractor Manhattan Beach Asks, “Which Direction Are You Headed With Your Health?”

When patients come into my office, I ask myself, “which direction are they headed with their health?”

It doesn’t matter where you are at this moment, it matters where you’re heading.

We have some patients whose spines are really poor and they’re not in good shape, but they really have that attitude and discipline where now they’re determined to go into the direction where they’re adding more to their health by getting regular adjustments, doing their spinal molding at home, working on their mental attitude, as well as their nutrition. Really, they’re committed to their health and have the attitude to do it. That type of person is in the right direction in building health opposed to some people that come in that may be in good health at that time, they look good and look fit, they get checked out with all their medical tests and the doctors says they’re healthy, but they’re in the direction where they aren’t practicing those good things, they aren’t getting their adjustments like they should to keep the nerve system working properly, they aren’t eating right, hey aren’t getting the proper exercise and working on their mental mindsets. Those guys are actually moving away from health. It really depends on which direction you’re headed. So, this week, let’s really give an honest evaluation to see which way you are honestly focusing on which way are you headed.

Just remember, every moment is a new beginning.

The Benefits of the One Pound Rule

This is Dr. Rob coming form Bates Chiropractic. I’m here nourishing my lower spine discs with a chair called the wobble chair. It’s designed to nourish the lower discs of the lumbar spine. After the age of 25, we begin to lose direct blood flow to the discs, which means you won’t get the proper nourishment without motion. It’s a great instrument for that.

Since we’re on the topic of nourishment, the last two video blogs have been on the one pound rule. We want to cover a few benefits of that rule. Remember, the one pound rule consists of two pounds of vegetables per day: one pound of raw and one pound of steamed. The rule is that you must eat the vegetables before your regular meals. For example: in the morning, you’ll have a heart or romaine lettuce, in the afternoon, you’ll have a huge bowl of salad, and in the evening, another salad or a big plate of steamed veggies.

The benefits of said diet are such:  The average American has about 5 % of vegetables in their diet, and that 5% mainly consists of French fried potatoes. Right away, you can see the benefits of adding more vegetables to your diet. If you’re adding what we’re talking about, you’ll be way ahead of the game.

The benefits of adding vegetables to your diet is that you’ll be getting loads of phytochemicals, phytonutrients, vitamins, minerals, and fiber. You should also note that when you have all those protective nutrients from the antioxidants and the phytochemicals, they are going to give you protection against diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. And completely natural!

In fact, if you were to just increase your diet of cruciferous vegetables by 20 %, you would decrease your cancer rate 40 %. If the pharmaceutical companies were to find a way to put that into an anti- cancer type of drug, I can guarantee you, you’d hear all about that. It would be plastered all over the world that this drug can decrease cancer rates by 40 %, but they can’t do that, because they can’t patent broccoli or cauliflower or cabbage. These are all natural things.

So, there are amazing benefits to the one pound rule that can save your life aside from the weight loss! If you have any questions, you can contact me here @ www.chiropractormanhattanbeach.com .

Keep spreading the word. We appreciate serving you. Have a good day!

Pain-free Weight Loss! Lose 16 Pounds in 1 Month!

Since it’s almost summertime, we’re going to be taking off our winter coats and shedding those extra pounds to get ready for the beach season. We all want to fit into our bathing suits, right? A lot of people are going to be trying some crazy diets, I’m sure.

What we want today is how to have pain-free weight loss! That’s key, the pain free part!

Anytime someone changes their diet, it’s very psychological. That’s the biggest place where it hits people because it’s more of a habit.

Have you ever had that situation where you end up at refrigerator not knowing why you’re there?

What we want to start off with is the best food you can base your diet around.

If you see what the USDA recommends at the base of the pyramid, you’ll see that they want the majority of food intake to be made up of bread, cereal, rice, and pasta. But, if you look at studies on the nutritional content of food, you’ll see that a high nutrient content per calorie ratio equates to optimum health.

Picture white sugar, for instance; it is very high in calories with low nutrient content. So, it would lead to poor health!

What is the most nutritionally dense food we can eat, you ask?

That would be raw leafy green vegetables, based on the Nutrient-Density Line found in Eat to Live by Dr. Fuhrman.

If you want to lose weight, the more greens you eat, the more weight you lose!

Raw leafy greens are at the top of the line with 100 points as opposed to whole grains with 22 points and refined grains (white flour) with 2 points!

Breads, etc are much closer to junk food and low on the nutrition-calorie ratio compared to vegetables.

The type of diet that you want to start off with would have vegetables as your base. Raw leafy greens and steamed veggies as well!

Stay tuned for our next video that talks more about the specific diet in which you could have pain-free weight loss and lose up to 16 pounds in one month without pain or agony.

Wait for next week to get all that information; until then, have a great week and keep charging!
